Toys children already know

Many children have a favorite teddy, a box of blocks or a memory of a kite in the park. Seeing a toy they know on paper makes the page feel familiar and gives them something to talk about while they color.

Each page shows one toy as a friendly character: a teddy bear holding out a heart, a smiling tower of four blocks with an arch block and a ball beside it, and a kite dancing in the wind with a tail of three bows. The outlines are thick, the shapes are big and soft, and the blocks are plain, with no letters or numbers.

The teddy bear and the kite are marked Very simple, for children of 2 and 3. The block tower is marked Simple. Each block has a few plain sides, which gives children of 4 and 5 more areas to color.

Ideas while you color

  • Color your own teddy

Bring a favorite teddy or soft toy to the table and color the page to match it, or give it a brand-new look.

  • One color per block

Pick a different color for each block in the tower. It's an easy way to practice color names.

  • Build it for real

After coloring, build the same tower with real blocks: a big cube, a cylinder, a smaller cube and a triangle on top.

  • Add more toys

Older children can draw a ball, a doll or a drum in the empty space, or give the kite a longer tail with more bows.

Questions parents ask

Which toy page is best for a 2-year-old?

Start with the teddy bear with a heart. It is marked Very simple, with one soft figure, big round shapes and a single heart.

Why are there no letters on the building blocks?

Letters and numbers would add small details and make the blocks harder to color. Plain blocks leave big areas, and older children can write their own letters on them if they like.

Is the block tower page too hard for a 3-year-old?

It is marked Simple, so it has more areas than the teddy or the kite. A 3-year-old can color the big front of each block and leave the rest, and some enjoy the whole page.

Can we give a toy page as a present?

Yes. A colored teddy bear holding a heart makes a sweet card for a grandparent or a friend. Fold the page or glue it onto card.
