Sun, rain and flowers with a friendly face

Young children often talk about the weather in their own words: the sun is out, it's raining, there's a puddle. A page about the sky or the garden connects to what they saw outside this morning, and it gives them something to look for on the next walk.

On our nature pages, the sun, the cloud and the flower each have eyes and a smile. A face turns a simple shape into a character, which many young children find easier to talk about. The outlines are thick, the shapes are big and the background stays white, so each page is calm and easy to fill.

The little rain cloud over a puddle is marked Very simple, for children of 2 and 3. The sun peeking out from a cloud and the smiling flower are marked Simple. They add rays, petals, a small rainbow or a flowerpot for children of 4 and 5.

Ideas while you color

  • Check the sky first

Before you start, look out of the window together. Is it sunny, cloudy or rainy today? Then pick the page that matches.

  • Count the petals

The smiling flower has six big petals. Count them together, then color each one differently or all of them the same.

  • A three-band rainbow

The small rainbow next to the sun has three wide bands. Older children can pick three colors and decide the order themselves.

  • Who jumps in the puddle?

Ask who might jump in the rain cloud's puddle. Older children can draw rain boots or a duck in the empty space beside it.

Questions parents ask

Which nature page suits a 2-year-old?

The little rain cloud over a puddle. It is marked Very simple, with one cloud, three big raindrops and a flat puddle. The sun and the flower have a few more parts.

Why do the sun and the flower have faces?

Many young children talk to toys and things around them as if they were friends. A face gives the sun or the flower a personality and a clear place to start: the eyes and the smile.

Does the sun have to be yellow?

No. A pink sun, a purple cloud and a blue flower are all fine. At this age, picking a color and filling a shape matters more than getting it right.

Is there a page for a rainy day indoors?

Yes. Color the little rain cloud over a puddle first, then the sun peeking out from a cloud, and talk about what happens when the rain stops.
