Very simple pages are still great when your child wants to finish something fast.

What helps a 4-year-old enjoy coloring

Many 4-year-olds like a page with something to work on: a ladder to color rung by rung, a mane in several colors, a cloud made of puffs. They start to fill shapes more carefully and enjoy the result.

The pages we suggest at 4 keep the thick outlines and big areas of our simplest pages but add a few extra shapes. Everything still fits on one A4 sheet with plenty of white space, so the page never feels crowded.

Some 4-year-olds still prefer the simplest pages, especially when they're tired. Age is only a guide, so let your child choose.

Tips for coloring with a 4-year-old

  • Try colored pencils

Next to crayons, colored pencils help with smaller areas like windows and stars.

  • Add to the page

Invite your child to draw a sun, a road or a friend in the empty space. It turns a coloring page into their own picture.

  • Make a pattern

Suggest stripes or dots on a big area, like the cloud or the side of the truck. Patterns are a fun next step after plain filling.

  • Color for someone

A page for a grandparent or a friend gives the coloring a purpose and something to talk about.

Questions parents ask

Which coloring pages are best for a 4-year-old?

Pages marked Simple, like the smiling fire truck or the unicorn on a cloud. They have a few more shapes and still keep thick lines and big areas.

Are the pages too easy for a 4-year-old?

Some children want more of a challenge at 4. Let them add patterns or draw their own background around the character.

Can a 4-year-old use markers?

Yes. Washable markers with a broad tip work well, and fine-tip markers help with small areas.
