Stories your child can color

Many children play pretend long before they can tell a whole story. A page from this category gives that play something to hold on to: a castle to live in, a magical friend to talk to, a planet to visit.

Fairy-tale world has gentle magical creatures. Princesses and castles brings crowns and towers. Space takes make-believe up to the moon, the stars and the planets: real places, drawn here with the same soft, rounded shapes as the fairy tales. Every character is kind and every scene is calm.

All three topics have Very simple pages for ages 2 and 3, with one character and big open areas, and Simple pages for ages 4 and 5, with a few extra shapes to fill. If your child can't decide between a castle and a planet, print both.

Ideas while you color

  • Who lives here?

Ask who lives in the castle or on the planet, and what they had for breakfast. The sillier the answer, the more fun the page.

  • Mix the worlds

A princess on the moon or a unicorn among the stars is fine. Let your child draw something from one page onto another.

  • Read, then color

Pick a page that matches a bedtime book you share, like a castle or the moon. Coloring it the next day brings the story back.

  • Make it a puppet

Cut out a finished character, tape it to a straw and use it to act out a story. Grown-ups handle the scissors.

Questions parents ask

Which make-believe page suits a 2-year-old?

Look for pages marked Very simple in any of the three topics. They show one character with very few details. Big scribbles across the page are fine at this age.

Which topic should we try first?

Start with what your child already plays. Children who love dress-up often head for Princesses and castles, and those who point at the moon may like Space. Fairy-tale world suits fans of magical animals.

Is Space real or make-believe?

A bit of both. The moon, the stars and the planets are real, but the pages draw them as friendly pictures, not exact ones. They can start a nice talk about the night sky.

How can my child make a page their own?

Invite them to fill the white space: more stars, a path to the castle door, a friend for the main character. Writing their name in a corner makes it feel finished.
