A small kingdom to color

Crowns, towers and talking frogs turn up in many of the first stories children hear. They are easy to recognize and fun to pretend with, so a child can decide who lives in the castle and where the princess is going before picking up a crayon.

In this topic, the princess wears a small crown and holds out a daisy, the castle has a friendly face and two round towers, and the frog prince waves from a lily pad. The outlines are thick, the gown and the walls are plain, and there are no bricks, lace or tiny details to get lost in.

The smiling castle is marked Very simple, for children of 2 and 3. The princess and the frog prince are marked Simple: they add a bow, a flower or a lily pad for children of 4 and 5 who want a bit more to color.

Ideas while you color

  • Design the gown

The princess's gown has a bodice, two puffy sleeves and two big skirt tiers. Each part can be a different color, or the whole gown can be one favorite.

  • Who lives in the castle?

Ask your child who lives behind the big door and what they do all day. A little story makes the coloring last a bit longer.

  • Make a matching crown

Cut a simple crown from paper, color it like the princess's crown and wear it while you color. The page becomes part of the pretend play.

  • Count the points

Count the points on the princess's crown, then the towers on the castle. Small numbers on big shapes are easy to see and point at.

Questions parents ask

Which princess page suits a 2-year-old?

The smiling castle. It is marked Very simple, with two round towers, a big door and a small flag. The princess and the frog prince have a few more parts, so they suit children from about 4.

Are these princesses from films?

No. The princess, the castle and the frog prince are our own original drawings, so there is no correct way to color them. Your child decides.

Is the princess page too detailed for a younger child?

It has a few more parts than our very simple pages: a crown, a bow and a daisy. Each part is still big, with a bold outline. A younger child can color the gown and the crown and leave the rest.

What can my child add to the castle page?

Older children can draw a path up to the door, a sun or a few flowers. The white space around the castle leaves room for it.
