Simple pages add a few more shapes. Some 2-year-olds love them too, so let your child decide.

What helps a 2-year-old enjoy coloring

At 2, coloring is mostly scribbling, and that's exactly right. Children are learning to hold a crayon, to make marks on purpose and to see that their marks stay on the page. A good coloring page gives them something to talk about while they do it.

That's why the pages we suggest for 2-year-olds have one character they can name, like a kitten or a baby dinosaur, and a few very big areas. There's no background and there are no small parts, so the page never looks finished before your child has started.

Every child is different, and age is only a guide. If your 2-year-old points at a more detailed page, print that one.

Tips for coloring with a 2-year-old

  • Use chunky crayons

Thick crayons or crayon blocks are easier to grip than pencils, and they don't break as quickly.

  • Tape the page down

A little tape at the corners stops the paper sliding around, so your child can focus on the crayon.

  • Keep it short

A few minutes of coloring is a good session at this age. Stop while it's still fun and come back later.

  • Name and point

Point at the eyes, the ears, the tail. Naming the parts of the picture is half the fun for a 2-year-old.

Questions parents ask

Can a 2-year-old really color a page?

Yes, in their own way. Expect big scribbles across the whole page rather than neat filling. That is normal, and it builds hand control.

Which coloring pages are best for a 2-year-old?

Pages marked Very simple, with one character, very thick lines and big areas. Start with the kitten with a butterfly or the dino hatching from an egg.

Crayons or markers for a 2-year-old?

Chunky crayons are the easiest start. Washable markers give bright colors with less pressure, but keep an eye on the caps.

My child scribbles over the lines. Is that OK?

Yes. Staying inside the lines comes much later. At 2, choosing a color and moving the crayon is the whole point.
