Favorite foods with a friendly face

Children often know exactly what color an apple or a cherry should be, and many have strong opinions about ice cream flavors. That makes food an easy topic to color and to talk about, even for children who don't have many words yet.

Each food page shows one treat with a smiling face: an apple with a stem and a leaf, a cupcake looking up at the cherry on its frosting, and an ice cream cone with two round scoops. The shapes are plump and round, the outlines are thick, and there are no tiny crumbs, seeds or patterns to fill.

The apple and the ice cream cone are marked Very simple, for children of 2 and 3. The cupcake is marked Simple. Its pleated cup, frosting swirls and sprinkles give children of 4 and 5 more areas to color.

Ideas while you color

  • Pick a flavor

Ask which flavor each ice cream scoop is, then choose a color to match. Strawberry pink and mint green are favorites, but any color works.

  • Red, green or yellow

Apples come in more than one color. Look at a real apple together, or let your child invent a brand-new kind.

  • Count the sprinkles

The cupcake has six big sprinkles. Count them together, then give each one its own color.

  • Color at snack time

Color the apple page while you share a real apple. It's an easy moment to talk about shape, color and taste.

Questions parents ask

Which food page is best for a 2-year-old?

Start with the smiling apple or the happy ice cream cone. Both are marked Very simple, with one big shape and very few small parts.

Is the cupcake page too detailed for younger children?

It has a few more parts: a pleated cup, frosting swirls, sprinkles and a cherry. Each part is still big, with a thick outline. A younger child can color the cup and the frosting and leave the sprinkles.

Should I use the food pages to talk about healthy eating?

You can, but there's no need to. Coloring works best as a relaxed activity, and talking about how the foods look and taste is often enough.

What can older children add to a food page?

A table, a spoon, a napkin or a friend to share with. The empty space around each drawing leaves room for their own additions.
