Dinosaurs without the scary parts

Many children love dinosaurs long before they can say the names. Most dinosaur pictures, though, are full of teeth, claws and scales: too scary for some children and too detailed for small hands. Our dinosaurs are babies. They hatch from eggs, munch leaves and say hello.

Every dinosaur page has big round shapes and thick outlines, with no scale patterns and no busy jungle in the background. That leaves large areas to fill, which is what children of 2 to 5 enjoy most.

Pages marked Very simple, like the dino hatching from an egg, suit the youngest children. Pages marked Simple add a few small extras, such as leaves or footprints, for children who want more to color.

Ideas while you color

  • There's no wrong dinosaur color

Nobody knows exactly what color dinosaurs were, so pink, blue or striped are all correct. Tell your child that and watch them choose.

  • Big and small

Talk about the baby dinosaur in its egg and how big its mom might be. It's an easy way to practice big and small.

  • Add the sound effects

Roar quietly, stomp gently, crack the egg. Little sounds keep young children at the table a bit longer.

  • Start with the egg

The big round egg is the easiest shape on the page. Coloring it first gives a quick win before the smaller parts.

Questions parents ask

Are these dinosaur pages scary?

No. Every dinosaur is a friendly baby with a round face, soft eyes and no sharp teeth or claws.

Which dinosaur page should a toddler start with?

The dino hatching from an egg. It is marked Very simple, with one character, a big egg and very few small parts.

Do the pages show real dinosaur species?

Not exactly. The characters are cartoon babies inspired by dinosaurs in general, so children can make them whatever they like.

What can older preschoolers do with a dinosaur page?

Let them draw their own things around the dinosaur: a sun, grass, a nest or footprints. The empty space around each drawing is there for that.
