Farm animals and the sounds they make

Moo, cluck and oink are among the first animal sounds many children learn, often from songs and picture books. A farm page builds on that: your child can point at the cow, make its sound and decide what color it should be.

Our farm animals are round and friendly, with thick outlines and big shapes. There's no barn, no fence and no busy farmyard behind them. The cow has no spots and the pig's puddle has no splashes, so every area stays big and easy to fill.

The cow saying moo and the pig in a puddle are marked Very simple, for children of 2 and 3. The hen with her chick is marked Simple. It adds a second animal, tail feathers and a small daisy for children of 4 and 5.

Ideas while you color

  • Moo, cluck, oink

Make each animal's sound before you color it. For children who don't talk much yet, the sounds often come more easily than the words.

  • Mom and baby

The hen keeps her chick close under one wing. Talk about who is the mom and who is the baby, and let your child pick a color for each.

  • What's in the puddle?

Ask what the pig is sitting in: mud, rainwater or something else. Brown, blue and pink all work for a puddle.

  • Sing while you color

A farm song you both know, with a verse for each animal on the page, can keep a young child coloring a little longer.

Questions parents ask

Which farm animal page is best for a 2-year-old?

Start with the cow saying moo or the pig in a puddle. Both are marked Very simple, with one animal, thick lines and big shapes.

Is the hen and chick page harder?

A little. It is marked Simple, so it has more parts: two animals, tail feathers, a wing and a small daisy. Each part is still big with a thick outline, and younger children can color the hen and leave the rest.

What can my child add to a farm page?

The empty space around each animal is there to fill. Older children can draw grass, a fence, a sun or a little barn next to the animal.

Do the farm pages work for a group of children?

Yes. Print a different animal for each child, then hang the pages together to make a farm on the wall. Every page is free and needs no account.
