Little garden creatures, drawn big

Children often spot bugs before adults do: a ladybug on a fence, a snail after the rain, a bee on the flowers. A bug coloring page brings that small discovery back to the table, where your child can make it as big and bright as they like.

Real bugs are full of tiny legs, hairs and patterns. Ours are round, smiling characters made of a few big shapes. The ladybug has four big spots, the bee's stripes are wide bands to color and the snail's shell has one simple spiral. The bee has no stinger, and every face is friendly.

The ladybug on a leaf and the snail on a leaf are marked Very simple, for children of 2 and 3. The bee with a flower is marked Simple. It adds wings, stripes and a five-petal flower for children of 4 and 5.

Ideas while you color

  • Go on a bug walk

After coloring, look for a real ladybug, bee or snail in the garden or the park. Watch it from close by and leave it where you found it.

  • Count the spots

The ladybug has four big spots, two on each side. Count them together, then color them all the same or each one different.

  • Slow and quick

Try slow, careful strokes on the snail and quick ones on the bee's wings. Then talk about which animal is faster.

  • Follow the spiral

Before coloring the snail's shell, trace its spiral with a finger from the outside in. It's a fun shape for small hands to follow.

Questions parents ask

Which bug page is best for a 2-year-old?

Start with the ladybug on a leaf or the snail on a leaf. Both are marked Very simple, with one bug, one leaf, thick lines and big areas.

My child is afraid of insects. Are these pages OK?

Our bugs are round, smiling characters, not realistic insects. There are no hairy legs and the bee has no stinger. Some children like talking about real bugs through a friendly drawing, but let your child decide.

Does the ladybug have to be red?

No. Real ladybugs come in several colors, and on paper any color works. The spots can match the wings or stand out.

Is the bee page harder than the others?

A little. It is marked Simple and has more parts: wings, stripes and a flower with five petals. Each part is still big with a thick outline, so younger children can color just the bee.
