Trucks and trains from the street, ready to color

Children spot vehicles everywhere: the garbage truck on collection day, the bus, the fire truck with its siren on. A vehicle coloring page lets them make their own version, in whatever colors they like.

Our vehicles have big round wheels, soft corners and a cheerful face on the front. The shapes are large and the outlines are thick, so wheels, windows and doors are each easy to fill. The background stays almost empty: a ground line and maybe one cloud.

The smiling fire truck is marked Simple. It has a ladder, a siren light and a coiled hose to color. Pages marked Very simple keep to the body, the wheels and the face, for the youngest children.

Ideas while you color

  • Name the parts

Wheels, windows, ladder, light. Pointing at each part and naming it builds vocabulary and gives a natural order to color in.

  • Red is optional

A fire truck can be every color of the rainbow. If your child wants a classic red one, that's fine too.

  • Count the wheels

Count the wheels, windows or ladder rungs together. Vehicles are full of things that come in twos and fours.

  • Add a road

Older children can draw a road, a house or traffic lights around the vehicle. The empty space on the page leaves room for it.

Questions parents ask

Which vehicle page suits a 2-year-old?

Start with the little train or the smiling car. Both are marked Very simple, with one vehicle and big shapes. The smiling fire truck is marked Simple, so it suits children from about 4, but younger children can enjoy it too.

Why do the vehicles have faces?

A friendly face turns a vehicle into a character. Young children connect with it more easily, and the eyes and smile are fun to color.

Is the fire truck page too detailed for small children?

It has a few more parts than the very simple pages: a ladder, a light and a hose. Each part is still big, with a thick outline. If it feels like a lot, color the body and wheels and leave the rest.
