Halloween that stays friendly

Halloween is full of pumpkins, costumes and ghosts, and many young children want to join in. A lot of Halloween art, though, has sharp teeth, dark scenes and spooky faces that can upset a small child. Our Halloween pages keep the fun parts and leave out the scary ones.

The pumpkin has a soft smile with no jagged teeth. The kitten wears a floppy witch hat and looks up at its bent tip, and the ghost is round and gentle, waving hello with a lollipop in its other hand. There are no dark backgrounds, bats or spiders, just thick outlines and big white areas.

The friendly pumpkin and the smiling ghost are marked Very simple, for children of 2 and 3. The kitten in a witch hat is marked Simple, with a small pumpkin and a moon to color as well, for children of 4 and 5.

Ideas while you color

  • Pumpkins come in every color

A pumpkin doesn't have to be orange. A blue, green or striped one is just as good, and choosing is part of the fun.

  • Decorate the door

Cut out the finished pumpkin or ghost and tape it to the front door or a window. It makes a gentle Halloween decoration your child made.

  • Talk about costumes

The kitten is dressed up as a witch. Ask what your child would like to dress up as, and draw that hat or costume in the empty space.

  • Color the ghost too

A ghost doesn't have to stay white. Pale blue, pink or a different color for each arm makes it look even friendlier.

Questions parents ask

Are these Halloween pages scary?

No. The pumpkin, the kitten and the ghost all have soft smiles and friendly eyes. There are no sharp teeth, dark scenes or spooky shapes.

Which Halloween page suits a 2-year-old?

The friendly pumpkin. It is marked Very simple, with one round pumpkin, a stem and a leaf. The smiling ghost is marked Very simple too.

Is the kitten in a witch hat too detailed for small children?

It has a few more parts than the very simple pages: the hat, a small pumpkin and a moon. Each part is big, with a bold outline. A younger child can color the kitten and its hat and leave the rest.

My child is afraid of ghosts. Should we skip that page?

Follow your child's lead. Our ghost is round, smiling and waving, and some children like seeing a friendly one. If not, the pumpkin and the kitten are just as much fun.
